OEM vs Wholesale: Which Model Works Better in 2026?

Choosing the right strategy depends on your market and long-term goals

As competition in the vape industry intensifies, choosing the right business model is becoming increasingly important.

For many distributors, the decision often comes down to two options: wholesale or OEM.

Wholesale remains the fastest way to enter the market. It requires lower upfront investment, shorter lead times, and minimal product development effort. This makes it particularly attractive for new entrants or those testing new regions.

However, the downside is becoming more obvious in 2026.

Because many wholesalers are selling similar products, price competition is getting stronger. In some cases, distributors are competing with nearly identical items, leaving little room for differentiation.

OEM, on the other hand, offers a different approach.

Although it requires more time and initial investment, it allows businesses to build their own brand identity. This includes:

  • Custom flavor profiles
  • Unique product design
  • Market-specific packaging

We’ve observed a growing number of mid-sized distributors transitioning from wholesale to OEM after reaching a certain scale.

One common strategy is a hybrid approach:

Start with wholesale to test the market → Identify best-selling products → Gradually develop OEM versions.

This reduces risk while still moving toward long-term brand building.

From a future perspective, OEM is likely to become more important as regulations tighten and markets mature. Unique branding and compliance-ready products will play a bigger role in gaining distributor trust and consumer loyalty.

That said, wholesale will not disappear. It will continue to serve as a flexible and efficient entry point.

The key is not choosing one over the other, but understanding when to use each strategically.
